Richard, tell me a little more about the car...year etc...

Alternator not charging.

When I have had this problem I start with the following.

1.) Check the main power wire coming off the alternator for corrosion and or other issues.
2.) Check the post on the alternator where the wire attaches. This post can become damaged and disjointed from the alternator itself. This happens when tightening or loosening the bolt to attach the main wire. it gets twisted out of position.
3.) Go directly to the alternator output wire on the alternator itself, with a volt meter and confirm output at the alternator.
4.) If alternator is not producing correct output you can rule out everthing behind it. Address the alternator itself. Take it to the parts store and have it checked.

Most problems I have had have been with reman units. I always buy them from O'Reily's because they have a life time warranty. I get a new one every time it goes down. About every 2 years historically.

From there it has been the post on the back of the unit or the wiring itself.

I hope some of that helps.

the alternator is a rebult and this is the 3rd one already that i have tried so far and i have been taking them in to get the alternator checked and everytime and all the time it was a good and all the connections are new from the power wire to the harnesss to the jumper wire and the car is a 96 i havent had this problem yet it is the first time i have had it in the shop and still nothing their might be a wire thats bad somewhere and i am tring to trace it but no luck yet and also the starter is good and the silonoid and the battery is a new one as well

Run a 2 ga wire direct from the alternator to the positive on the battery and see if you get charging then. If you do, then it is in the factory wiring.

On my coupe, i had to run a second wire like that to keep things going, but that car was built pretty good.

i have a question there were 2 fuseable links on the car so now they are off the car and there is no more wire will that wires make a difference or do i have to put those wires back on the car?:38:

Go back to what was changed. If the fuse-able links were there before and now taken off, I would put them back in line where they were and try that.

Did you try running a separate cable direct to the battery from the back of the alternator?

yes i tried the separate wire from the alternator and now it has it good days and bad days one day it will do good and the next it will do bad with no charge and all i am doing is running off my battery i am thinking of getting anouther battery but i dont want it to do the same to the new one i am tring to hold off on that for now until i figure whats the problem. thanks again for all your help i appreciate it:stang2:

At idle how much voltage are you seeing at the battery?

right now i have a dead battery the charge never came back up so i am going to have the battery charged again and when i get some money together i am going to have to take it to a electrical shop because i might have something seriously wrong with the wireing i am going to hopefully take care of all this bull by next week.:blkstang:

I'm sorry you are still having this problem. The alternator should be putting at least 14volts to the battery at idle. If it is not, there is no way your battery is going to make it.

Do you have any accessories like an msd box, or stereo components that may be wired incorrectly and staying on all the time causing the drain?

Sorry, but I am still trying to troubleshoot...

as far as stereo systems and all that everything is off the car and the radio is disconnected i went for anouther estimate today and they told me that the computer on the car is bad and that it is causing it to hit with a good charge and for it to drop as well hopefully i am going to find something out on monday and when the is at a full charge it is at 14 volts no problem and it is still drop the volts even now :ford:
